A quality exercise program can help you recover faster, have less pain and reduce your chance of injury, while making you healthier and happier along the way.
If you could bottle the effects of exercise, or take it as a pill we’d all want some. Reality is we all have different circumstances, time constraints, equipment, training experience and goals. So what form of exercise is right for you and what you want to achieve? As physiotherapists, creating or modifying your existing exercise program is a vital component to create positive change. Working out what you can do, instead of just what you can’t, will keep your activity levels up, and prevent detraining and facilitate a better recovery process.
Physical activity and exercise can be completed in a variety of ways, from walking and hiking to jogging and running, can involve mobility including yoga, Pilates and stretching, or sports with jumping, cutting and landing. Activity can be social, competitive, relaxing, or strenuous depending on what you enjoy and in the case of an injury, what you need to do to make yourself better and meet the required demands of that activity. If you don’t have any specific equipment, we will make a plan for you using bodyweight and household items. If you have a home gym, we will make a plan for you with the equipment you’ve got, and if you like or dislike some aspects of exercise, we will make a plan for you that you will actually complete. We understand that the best kind of exercise is enjoyable.
If you sustain an injury but already have a program in place from your strength coach or personal trainer, we may be able to continue a lot of the components of that program. At Clinic 1 Physiotherapy we will adapt exercises through appropriate exercise selection considering your pathology and phase of tissue healing. Some changes may be short-term; other changes will be longer to ensure we get the desired results. An individualized assessment will allow us to find your strengths to continue developing but also weaknesses or restrictions in movement, and rectify any weak links in the chain, to put all the pieces of the puzzle together. This is the detailed and holistic approach found in elite sport that we can now apply to your care.
The human body adapts to change! Following the same fitness routine, lifting the same weight and doing the same exercises will not promote the required change to improve. Exercise prescription and periodization are vital components to not only health and fitness goals, but also part of a thorough rehabilitation from injury. We aren’t there yet, but the goal in our industry is to build an “unbreakable athlete.” We want to provide the tools to make an athlete bulletproof, so that ideally their injury never happens, or never happens again.
If you have an injury or are stuck in the same routine, it may be time for a change. Clinic 1 Physiotherapy can help. Book Now.
